Yelling doesn't always mean you'll be heard.

So I read some good news on the weekend. Our very own, new, shock-jock talk radio station in Melbourne is on the verge of collapse. It's called MTR and its basic premise is blokes yelling at you and telling you you're a moron.

'But Tennyson,' you cry, 'how could such a promising station fail?' Well, for one thing, they imported the whole concept from Sydney. For my Northern Hemisphere readers, Sydney and Melbourne have been having a rivalry that would make the Hatfields and McCoys wonder what the fuck is going on. Melbourne hates Sydney and Sydney hates Melbourne and never the twain shall meet. So a radio station who's personnel, attitude and programming come almost exclusively from Sydney? Never going to fly, my friend.

Another reason was the personnel themselves. No women. Not one presenter on MTR - except for one woman sometime at night - was female. As the station manager Steve Price said - 'women are crap personalities. No one wants to listen to a female radio presenter. They're not entertaining.' Yeah, he actually said that.

But the main reason, I think, was Steve Price himself. A true knob. A man that would make the Fox presenters think they're real lefties. A man, so sure of himself and how well MTR would go, that he brooked no argument and would accept no advice. A man who believes there's no such thing as climate change; that ALL immigration should be stopped; that mining for coal, gas and oil should be done in National Parks and that a Liberal dictatorship should rule forever. Keeping in mind that Liberal over here, means Republican or Tory or whatever Right Wing focus floats your boat.

But now, MTR is coming to a close. Maybe that means that we're not all dumb hick yokels down this way? Maybe we can choose who we want to listen to, rather than be told? Or maybe it just means that we really, really HATE Sydney.

But those stations have value. They're great for making one feel grounded and smart. But for the grace of God...and all that. See?

GB: I think the whole point has been that they can't get ANY listeners, let alone callers.

UB: When I want to feel grounded and smart, all I have to do is turn on X Factor and the like. I don't need the addition of being yelled at.
